Multimodal Communication & Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
The use of multimodal communication is essential and something we all do (speak, text, write, gesture, etc). It is important to engage in the use of a multimodal approach to communication within all environments to ensure functional communication for your child.
AAC - What is it?
Augmentative communication methods are used to enhance existing speech & writing
Alternative options are used to replace speech & writing
Our speech pathology team has vast experience in finding the right multimodal communication supports to help your child communicate functionally and effectively across all environments (home, school and community).
AAC options can be used to support a child’s verbal speech or as an alternative to their verbal speech. Options can include:
Pictures and visuals (Schedules, behaviour supports)
Key Word Sign (KWS)
Speech generating devices (LAMP words for life, Unity, Proloquo2go, text to speech options)
PECS - Picture Exchange Communication System
PODD books - Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display
It is important that we help to find the right system to support your child.
A thorough assessment and trial of various low and/or high tech alternatives is essential to finding the right multimodal communication approach for your child.
If your child needs support from a speech pathologist to find the right AAC, we can help!
